General Competition Rules

General Competition Rules

  1. The decision of the Chairman of Judges is final.
  2. This competition is open to all cake decorators except employees of Squires Group, competition sponsors and their families. All commissioned contributors to SKMP magazines, B Dutton Publishing books, any tutors or demonstrators at Squires Kitchen School or shop and anyone exhibiting at the show (either on a trade stand or in the Wedding Cake Showroom) are also exempt from entering the competition.
  3. Classes may not be entered by any competitors who have won three golds in the same class at previous Squires Kitchen Exhibition Competitions. These competitors are eligible to enter other classes if they wish. (For example, competitors who have won three gold awards in a floral class may enter any class apart from the floral one).
  4. Exhibits entered individually must be the bona fide unaided work of a single competitor.
  5. A competitor may submit a maximum of two entries in any one class and may enter a maximum of two classes.
  6. Competitors may enter pieces from previous competitions held on or after 1st January 2018. Pieces entered in any competition before 1st January 2018 may not be entered into this competition.
  7. Competitors must comply with the specification of each class or their entry will not be judged.
  8. Boards can be of any shape unless otherwise specified, but must fit inside a square of the dimensions shown for each class. (Please note that allowance will be made for slight discrepancies in the size of a commercially produced cake board or drum as long as the correct drum size has been used. The metric dimensions quoted are rounded to the nearest centimetre (cm). Where no height restriction is specified, competitors must be aware that all entries are restricted by the size of the Competition Area and discretion should be used.
  9. Dummies may be used unless otherwise specified.
  10. Where ‘no artificial or commercial decoration allowed’ is stated in the schedule, (with the exception of decorative ribbon around the edge of the board) nothing inedible or commercially produced may be used in that class. Please ensure especially with metallic and glitter colours that you clarify with the manufacturer that the items used are EDIBLE.
  11. Entrants should be aware that, where ‘a minimum amount of…’ is stated in the schedule, this enables you to use any, or all, of the items specified, but with discretion.
  12. Where ribbon insertion is used on an entry, only edible (sugar) ribbon insertion is allowed.
  13. Only supports for tiered cakes, plastic pillars which are inserted into cakes, flower picks (or equivalent) may be inserted into competition entries but must be visible. Wires and other non food-grade items must NOT be inserted directly into the sugar/edible medium.
  14. Where used, the top open edge of flower picks must be visible.
  15. All return forms and documents MUST be submitted by the dates stated.
  16. The closing date for all entries is Friday 16th February 2018. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE. Please note, however, that we can only accept a certain number of entries due to space restrictions. Therefore entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis until classes are fully booked. We advise early booking to avoid disappointment.
  17. Entrants will be given a set of rules for their chosen class(es) once their entry form has been processed. Please read these rules carefully as any entry not complying with the rules of the class could be disqualified.
  18. Squires Kitchen reserves the right to refuse entries which don’t abide by the rules.
  19. Any query about the schedule should be addressed to the Chairman of Judges via Squires Kitchen.
